| The design problem was to create a single or dual exhaust
system to suit defined geometry of an automobile frame and part structure.
Once the manufacturer's design team has fixed the frame, available engine
types (4, 6 or 8 cylinder), and component options such as muffler, gas
tank and catalytic converter, the remaining problem is a monumental task
to design accessory components to fit such as exhaust piping systems and
wire harnesses. A CAD system is ideal for capturing the final
design of the components such as the muffler, the converter, and the engine.
A typical configuration software vendor would easily be able to manage
the bill of materials which could include all of those parts and even a
part number for the exhaust system once it was designed. However,
neither of these technologies can actually design the exhaust system once
the other component locations are defined. SEAshell can solve all
three issues should the customer so choose.
The user can select engine type, piping material and pipe diameter. Bend radius data for the material types guarantees that no restrictive elbows will be designed. The system takes this design input information from the operator and then performs a routing procedure to follow an optimal path from the headers on the selected engine back to the converter and then on to the muffler with avoidance allowance for the future placement of a gas tank. The final price for the completed design is shown to the operator, and VRML files can be generated automatically on command such that the chosen design can be shared within the company or the outside supply chain using standard Web browsers. Using the VRML file other associates not only get to see the graphic on their computer, they are able to “tour” the design using available rotation and zooming controls on the Web browser.
