Most electronic equipment vendors now outfit their field sales force with laptop PC’s which enable the local sales representative to work up a suggested bill of materials and pricing.  In some cases, the laptop data is fed back to a home office proposal system which actually finalizes the BOM and pricing data.  For large system proposals, the information is generally controlled or massaged by home office experts before the local salesperson is authorized to present it to his customer.

When working with a new vendor, the customer has to blindly accept the vendor's word that the proposed configuration will meet that customer's generic specification.  The customer works in the language of generic I/O data and the vendor responds in his own language of product nomenclature.  The process of translating the material list to the actual process system needs is expensive and time consuming for the customer.  Most home buyers would never agree to have a new house built without first seeing a full set of architectural plans and layouts.  Why should not the same be true for multimillion dollar control or electrical systems?  The SEAshell system provides not only the standard BOM but also produces a full three dimensional representation of the control room.  With such a representation, the salesperson or his client can easily verify that a proper configuration has been created.

Visually, it is very easy to ascertain the existence of spare slot capacity and necessary or desired panels or table wedges requested to develop a connected family of operator console stations.  At the earliest proposal stage through the final “as installed” stage the user can move control cards, module racks, termination panels and cabinets anywhere within the system and the rules will validate the requested option before allowing the changes.  Cable lengths will be resized as cabinets and panels are relocated, and power and memory requirements will be adjusted as cards are either added or removed from specific racks.  All changes can be fed to appropriate project and corporate databases as they are made.  Reports can be exported from the system to virtually any existing commercial software package.
